Season of Films 2010

Over 350 people attended our 2010 season. Supper provided an opportunity for people to discuss the issues. The films were held on Friday nights at the Surfworld theatrette.

The 2010 season included:-

14th May. Torquay Plastic Free? 

Film :Hawaii Message in the Waves  

Post film activity: Speakers Brendan Morris (Plantics CEO) and Caroline Hawkins (Plastic Bag Free Anglesea) 

 11th June. Sustainable Fishing

Film : The End of the Line

Post Film activity: Panel of Experts consisting of representatives of the Seafood Industry Victoria, DSE, Conservation Enterprises Unlimited and a local abalone fisherman.   

9th July. Rain Forest Rescue

Film: The Burning Season

Post film activity: Speaker Cathy Henkel, director and producer 

13th  August. How do we feed a growing community sustainably

Post film activity: Speaker David Bell (local organic grower and co-ordinator of the Torquay Farmers Market) David Bell delivered a great speech following this movie, you can read his speech here 

10th September. Water Wars

Film: Blue Gold - World Water Wars

Post film activity: Speaker Derek Ryan (local water harvesting expert) 

8th October. Reduce your impact

Film: No Impact Man 

Post film activity: Live music to celebrate the end of the film season

As a result of our film season we have seen positive changes in our community. 

 

Inspired audience member helped clean up rubbish in Hawaii

Kickstarted Plastic Bag Free Torquay Campaign

Filmgoers took ‘Message in the Waves’ to a wider audience

Potential for further collaboration between members of the sustainable fishing panel 

Sustainable Fishing Town Torquay idea initiated 

Secondary school teacher and others liaised with ‘The Burning Season’ movie director around future projects

Fresh inspired locals to grow food and use the Torquay Farmers Market

Many audience members found out about new ways of saving water and are taking action

No Impact Man generated lots of discussion about how to consume less

Over 20 new members joined SCEG on the film nights

Closer relationships were formed with local businesses through sponsorships and raffle donations

These are just a few of the more tangible results of the season.  We have also been approached by other groups who wished to replicate our work and we happily assisted.  

The film season has contributed to building SCEG's reputation as a highly active community group, which is keen to discuss and seek solutions to issues around climate change. We also provide an opportunity for individuals within our community to actively contribute to building community resilience.

Our thanks go to Zeally Bay Bakery and Meredith Dairy who have also been very generous providing bread and cheese for our suppers.
